Neurology or parts? Affirming IFS care for neurodiverse parents.

Service Description

Neurodiverse clients often arrive in the perinatal period having been told that everything about them is a symptom to be managed, and IFS can quietly reinforce that if we aren’t careful. Not everything is a part. A need for routine, sensory sensitivity to a newborn’s cries or a breastfeeding schedule, a different way of processing emotion, or a flat or delayed response to birth is often neurology, not a protector or a burden to unburden. But masking, perfectionism, shutdown, and shame can be parts, and pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood tend to turn up the volume on all of them. In this one-hour Lunch & Learn, we’ll look at how to tell the difference without pathologizing a client’s wiring or missing the parts that are hurting. You’ll learn how to ask better questions, follow your client’s own sense of what is and isn’t “them,” and practice IFS in a way that is truly neuroaffirming, honouring neurology as a valid way of being while still tending to the parts that formed around a lifetime of being misunderstood.
